Chkdsk is a program that checks the computer’s hard drive status for any additional errors with the hard drive. It is an inbuilt utility of Windows that are used to check the errors in the disk and media files. We used to run the Windows Check Disk Tool to detect and fix the file system. The chkdsk.exe file will scan the file system errors, bad sector and much more.

Syntax for Windows 8 and Windows 10

Check a disk and view the status report.

Chkdsk [volume[[path]file name]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]] [/B] [/scan] [/spotify]

  • volume – drive letter (followed by colon) indicates the mount point or the volume name.
  • filename – FAT / FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check the parts.
  • /F – Bug fixes on the disk
  • /V – FAT / FAT 32: Displays the full path and name of each file on the disk. In NTFS: Displays cleanup message.
  • /R – finds the bad section and recovers readable information (implies / F).
  • /L: Size – NTFS: Changes the log file size to specified the number of kilobytes. If the size is not specified, the current size is displayed.
  • /X – If necessary it dismounts the Volume. All opened handles to the volume will be valid then (implies /F)
  • /I – NTFS: Checks the index entries.
  • /C – only NTFS: Skips the checking of periods in folder structure.
  • /B – NTFS only: Re-evaluates the defective clusters on volume (implies /R)
  • /scan – only NTFS: runs on an online scan on Volume.
  • /forceofflinefix NTFS ONLY: bypass online repairs (should be used with “Scan”); All types of defects are sorted for offline repair (“chkdsk / spotfix”).
  • /perf – NTFS only (“Scanned / Use”) This option can have a negative impact on other operating systems running on the system as it uses more system resources to complete the scan as fast as possible.
  • /spotfix – NTFS only (“Scanned / Use”) This option can have a negative impact on other operating systems running on the system as it uses more system resources to complete the scan as fast as possible.
  • /sdcleanup – NTFS ONLY: garbage collects data for undesirable security (implies /F).
  • /offlinescanandfix – Runs scan and fix on the volume offline.

In addition to some checks in volumes, the time required to run chkdsk reduces time / I or circuit C.
